Joining a Zulip organization
By default, Zulip organizations require an invitation to join.
Organization owners can also allow anyone to join without an invitation, and/or restrict user email addresses to a company domain. See inviting new users.
Check if you need an invitation to join
Section titled “Check if you need an invitation to join”- Go to the Zulip URL of the organization.
- Click Sign up in the top right corner of the page.
- If you see a sign-up form, invitations are not required! Otherwise, the page will say that you need an invitation to join.
Check if you need an email from a specific domain
Section titled “Check if you need an email from a specific domain”- Go to the Zulip URL of the organization.
- Click Sign up in the top right corner of the page.
- Try to create an account with your desired email address.
- If your email address is not from an allowed domain, you will get an error message to that effect.
Accept an invitation
Section titled “Accept an invitation”Invitations to Zulip organizations often come by email. Look for an email from Zulip. It may take a few minutes for the invitation email to reach your inbox.
Alternatively, an organization administrator may have sent you an invitation link via another method.
Choose a federated username
Section titled “Choose a federated username”If your organization has federation enabled or supports signing up through
OpenID Connect without a contact email, the signup form may ask you to
choose a Federated username. This name identifies you as username@domain
in conversations with other organizations.
Your username must be unique within your organization. It must start with a
letter (a–z) and contain only letters (a–z), numbers, periods, underscores, or hyphens,
with at most 40 characters. Uppercase letters are converted to lowercase.
If your organization uses OpenID Connect for single sign-on, Zulip can suggest a username from your identity provider. If that name is unavailable or does not meet these requirements, choose another name.
Join without a contact email
Section titled “Join without a contact email”Some organizations support signing up through FedIdP or another OpenID Connect provider without adding a contact email. Use the provider’s signup button and choose your username and display name. If an invitation is required, start with an invitation link from an organization administrator.
Sign in using the same provider on future visits. You can optionally add and verify a contact email in account settings to receive email notifications. Organizations that require an email from a specific domain do not support signup without a contact email.
- If you are joining multiple Zulip organizations, we recommend using the Zulip Desktop app. The desktop app makes it easy to switch between different organizations.
- If your company uses single sign-on (SSO) authentication for Zulip, these instructions may not apply. Try going to your company’s Zulip URL to see if there are instructions there; otherwise contact your manager or IT department for company-specific instructions.
